Student visa rejections hit a decade high, driving enrollment drop
F-1 visa refusal rates surged to 35% globally in 2025, the highest in over a decade, with sharp increases across Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia. India’s rejection rate jumped from 36% in 2023 to 61% in 2025, signaling a major shift for one of the largest student pipelines to the U.S. The rise in denials, along with limited visa appointments, has contributed to a steep decline in international student enrollment. Experts warn this trend could cost U.S. universities billions in lost tuition and weaken long-term talent inflow.
OPT delays leave international graduates in limbo for months
A pause on processing OPT applications for students from travel-restricted countries has left many waiting for months with no clear timeline. While applications can still be submitted, they are not being reviewed, delaying work authorization and forcing graduates to miss job opportunities and income. The move is tied to expanded vetting measures, but no updated guidance has been issued so far. With an estimated two million applications impacted, including work permits, the uncertainty is pushing some students to consider leaving the U.S. altogether.

Court pushes back on USCIS green card freeze
A U.S. federal judge has ruled that USCIS cannot indefinitely pause green card applications tied to travel-restricted countries, calling the policy unlawful. The decision orders the agency to resume processing for 83 applicants in the case. The freeze had impacted individuals connected to 39 countries, including those already living legally in the U.S. While the ruling directly applies to the petitioners, it sets an important precedent. For applicants stuck in long backlogs, it reinforces that cases cannot be left in limbo indefinitely.
H-1B program faces pause and reset in new proposal
A new Republican-backed bill, the End H-1B Visa Abuse Act of 2026, proposes a three-year pause on new H-1B visas followed by major structural changes. It would cut the annual cap, replace the lottery with a wage-based system, and impose stricter hiring requirements on employers. The proposal also includes a $200,000 minimum salary, limits on dependents, and restrictions on pathways from student visas to permanent residency. If passed, this would significantly narrow access to US work opportunities for international talent.
💫Career Resources
80% of global VC went to AI. It’s not even close.
Q1 2026 saw record-breaking venture funding, with nearly $300 billion invested globally, and about 80% of it flowing into AI companies. A handful of massive rounds led by players like OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, and Waymo alone accounted for the majority of funding. The US dominated capital inflow, taking over 80% of the total. For professionals, the signal is clear: AI is where hiring, growth, and opportunity are concentrating at an unprecedented scale

Most people don't realise how many options exist outside the lottery. This session will change that.
We are hosting a free webinar with Visa Architect, where Nusrat G., Senior Immigration Attorney, and Swatilina Barik, Founder of Visa Architect, will break down real alternatives like O-1, cap-exempt H-1B, and J-1, covering how each works, who qualifies, timelines, long-term outcomes, and common mistakes, followed by a live Q&A.
