📗 Immigration desk: Visa news, options & updates
DHS Ends Automatic EAD Extensions (Effective October 30, 2025)
Starting October 30, 2025, DHS got rid of automatic extensions for EAD renewals. What does that mean? If you file a renewal on or after this date, you won't have that safety buffer anymore. If your new EAD doesn't get approved before your current one expires, you'll lose work authorization. Most EAD holders renewing after October 30, 2025. The good news: F-1 students on OPT or STEM OPT aren't affected. File your renewal up to 6 months before your EAD expires. Don't wait until the last minute because that automatic extension isn't there to save you anymore. DHS says it's about better security screening. Reality check: it's part of the bigger effort to tighten immigration rules..
New $1,000 Parole Fee for Advance Parole (But You Might Be Exempt)
A lot of I-485 applicants are getting notices about the new $1,000 immigration parole fee that kicked in on October 16, 2025. The good news is if you have a pending I-485, you're likely exempt. You just need to show CBP two things when you return to the U.S - your advance parole document, your I-485 receipt notice. If you're on H-1B, H-4, L-1, or L-2 this doesn't affect you at all. You're entering on your visa, not parole. The fee sounds intimidating, but most I-485 folks traveling on advance parole are exempt. Just keep your I-485 receipt handy when you travel.
💫 Founder's corner: Resources, capital & growth hacks
Render's Startup Program: Free Credits for Founders
Building a startup? Render has a program worth checking out. They offer free cloud infrastructure credits depending on your stage. Most startups get $5K in credits through their accelerator or VC's perks program. If you're rapidly scaling with top-tier VC backing, you can get $10K to $25K in credits. And if you're working on compute-intensive AI projects with $2.5M+ in funding, you could qualify for $100K in credits (AI tier). You'll need to apply through your VC or accelerator's partner program. Worth exploring if you want to save on infrastructure costs while you build.
The Board Meeting Blueprint: How to Run Your Board Like a Pro
If you're a founder preparing for your first board meeting or want to level up how you run them, this guide is gold. It breaks down how to turn board meetings from quarterly defense sessions into high-leverage operating sessions where you lead, not react. The piece covers how to structure your board pack (your narrative in numbers, not just spreadsheets), how to run the actual meeting with a clear timeline, and why keeping a decision log and action register earns investor trust.
